Answers to some Frequently Asked Questions!

Answers to some Frequently Asked Questions!

    • What is the ideal temperature range to use crack stick.  I’m in Texas and it’s 100 degrees now, is that too warm?  The temperature should not be an issue. The product liquefies at 250 degrees F. If the material is tacky after cooled you can add sand to the surface which will act as a blotter.
    • Will the Crackstix / Pli Stix bond/seal to the sides of the asphalt crack? Yes. Be sure to clean the side walls of the cracks.
    • I have freshly place concrete and would like to get my control joints filled before snow. Is there a recommended cure time on the concrete before using crack stix? Answer: 28 days.  Heat will cause it to spall if not fully cured.

    • What is the recommended source of heat? Butane or MAPP? Either will work, MAPP is a hotter and will melt faster.  Heat guns work fine too.
    • Is this material compatible with driveway sealer? Yes
    • How low of a temperature you can install this at? 32 degrees F.  Frost cannot be present in the ground.
    • Is it approved by any State Dept of Transportation?  No, Direct Fire products are not approved by the State. Although, Direct Fire meets the majority of the ASTM 6690 Type 1,2 requirements, the material does not have crumb rubber in it.
    • Can this product be used in a vertical foundation wall? No sorry, when heated the products liquify and will run.
    • Is this a single use application?  In other words, if you have a crack wider than 1/2", and deeper than 1/2", can multiple ropes be used to fill the crack?  If so, what would be the application process? Yes multiple applications will work. You can fill the crack, heat and add more and reheat if need be.
    •  I presume this product is flexible, to a point.  If a crack develops after proper application of the product, can the crack be repaired with another application of the same product? Yes, the great thing about this product is that it can be reheated and added to years down the road.
    • Can I use sand first if it's a deep crack or joint? Yes, polymeric sand will work well locking in the base and holding in place while our product is installed.  You can also use closed cell backer rod or stone dust.
    • What is the melting temperature of the material after it has been installed? (Note:Folks who have installed this material in Florida driveways complain that it melts in FL sun.) The melting point is approximately 200F.  If properly applied in the crack the material is subsurface and will not track.
    • Does it become brittle at temperatures below 32 degrees F? Brittle no, but the colder it is the stiffer the material will get. If you are going to apply in cold weather we recommend bringing it inside the night before so it's pliable when you are ready to apply.
    • What is the difference between this product and the your pour-able Blacktop Crack Filler? Pli-Stix is 100% solid, not an emulsion.  The curing agent is temperature. The curing agent with pourable crack fillers is evaporation of water.
